Kanada 70

Kanada 70 is the solo project of sound savant Craig Dunsmuir, whose CD-R micro-releases have been circulating in the Toronto audiosphere for the past few years. Gravitating towards hand-played repetition, odd time signatures, and rhythmic clatter using guitar, drum machine and effects recorded straight onto a TASCAM digital 8-track, Kanada 70 creates miniatures that contain vast landscapes of sonic detail.

Dunsmuir’s past collaborations include recording-project duo Glissandro 70 with Sandro Perri, and more recently he has been releasing solo home recordings under the moniker, Max Gross. Look for other K70 and Max Gross material on Medusa Editions (Kanada 70′s Whumblescrapsse cassette) and Inyrdisk (Max Gross’ Fill Box CD-R).

Kanada 70 – Meagre Means

Mysterious CD-Rs have been appearing in records stores across Toronto for the last few years, all housed in photocopied Letraset sleeves with a $0.00 price sticker on the front, all under the moniker Kanada 70, the nom-de-plume of Craig Dunsmuir (Glissandro 70, Max Gross). Culling from several of these releases between 2006 and 2010, all recorded at home on a TASCAM digital 8-Track, Meagre Means reveals the musically literate range of Kanada 70; from Dusseldorf to Detroit, Mali to Berlin; at times angular and deconstructed, propulsive and motorik, and even popped and jacking. Meagre Means is the Polyphasic guide to the verdant DIY world of Kanada 70. This album is an absolute must for fans of Cluster, Pan Sonic, Mr. Fingers, Thomas Mapfumo and Basic Channel.

In keeping with the K70 xeroxed sleeve tradition, this download comes with a ‘print-your-own-sleeve’ PDF.

Michael Snow once told me that the first record player he owned as a teenager used a cactus needle as a stylus. Perhaps John Cage had this same player.     In related news, Takehisa Kosugi’s masterpiece Catch Wave has now been reissued by Phoenix Records. Get a copy while you can, this album is [...]
